The beginning of the riot grrrl movement is credited to the band Bikini Kill. As students in Washington around the same time grunge was taking off, MEMBERS wanted a space to feel heard. The music scene at the time was dominated by men, and they felt that it was unrelatable. Additionally, women were unsafe at a lot of shows, getting shoved around or assaulted. They catered their shows to women audiences, and created a space for them to feel safe. They fought for women to have equal rights, and brought about third-wave feminism (read more HERE).
