1991 Kathleen Hanna

The term Girl Power was coined by Kathleen Hanna in her zine, Bikini Kill (shown right).

Third-wave feminism began in the 1990s. It fought for women to be able to make their own choices about their lives, and for women to be seen as just as powerful and capable as men. Third-wave feminism is said to have started when Anita Hill testified that the Supreme Court nominee, Clarence Thomas, had sexually assaulted her. She lost her case, but it encouraged other women to also speak up against men who had assaulted them. The Me Too movement had a huge effect on society and the way that women's stories were received. Third-wave feminism was also sparked by the Riot Grrrl movement and its goals. Intersectionality was also introduced during this time. Intersectionality is the idea that there are layers to the oppression that women face. Race, sexuality, and class, among other things, all have a big effect on the way a woman is treated.
